Put that coffee down! Coffee’s for closers

Closers, how about Openers? coffee for Openers?

Hey ya’ll. Your buddy Cole here – an opener.

I want to take the moment to acknowledge Dave – a true closer – he’s been holding down the fort completely with Buy the Drip and pushing out all the content, between the weekly newsletter and the Guess the Drip videos that I’ve really enjoyed watching – I’m waiting for someone to get a perfect 10/10 score!

For those of ya’ll that don’t know, Dave and I are brothers. We’re business partners, we coach together and we’re supposed to be sharing the responsibility of creating Buy the Drip content. We’ve worked together for the last 15 years, grinding it out as Coffee Entrepreneurs. Well, I feel I haven’t been holding up my end of the bargain with Buy the Drip and have somewhat fallen off the map

At the beginning of the year, in an up in the air moment, after traveling for the majority of the last two years, I decided I’d take a leap and not move back to Calgary – the only city I’ve ever called home. I didn’t seek too much consultation, or opinion on the idea, though Dave was supportive when I gave him the pitch.

I’ve decided to take my talents to Chiriqui, Panama and re-open Forward Coffee.

I’m writing this email from my “home” in Boquete – a place in which I’ve unpacked my suitcase in, for the first time in a long time. I have a little barbecue, a pretty view of the Hills of Jaramillo, and very easy access in and out of Boquete for days that I need to hit the highway and head to a place such as Volcan.

Now, I haven’t formally announced that Forward Coffee will re-open, as it’s been an all-consuming three weeks of settling in. I was under-prepared and under-planned, thinking I could piece it all together in a pinch and hit the ground running.

I’m behind in terms of the goals I set out for at this point of the Forward journey, here in Panama – so I’m not just behind on Buy the Drip contributions.. I planned by this date to have the website up and operational, a proper announcement, visible inventory for sale and general excitement out in the World for the re-opening of Forward. Where I’m at today instead, is a insurmountable personal excitement, an inventory and system that’s coming together (I’m just shy of 500 coffee’s evaluated since arriving), and now, an announcement coming on Friday via the Forward newsletter, with a website that you’re about to see some fun updates on, weekly.

Shout-out to the 3D’s – the Rosso team of, Dave, Dom and Dan – coming to support for two weeks and source for Rosso’ Limited Series (which recently went through a killer face lift!) and then Hiroki Ito, the Japanese Barista Champion joined us for an overlapping two weeks as we prepare for the 2025 World Barista Championship.

Today is the first day I feel somewhat settled here in Panama and I needed to share some of my excitement. It’s the first day that I feel confident in publicly praising my brother Dave in his additional efforts this year with Buy the Drip and publicly committing to re-focus on supporting him in the creation of content, writing the newsletter and bringing focus back to the inspiring conversations with Global coffee professionals on the Buy the Drip Podcast.

Tomorrow and everyday, I will continue Forward to Buy the Drip 😉

Very excited for the road ahead.

Cole
